NBI Anti-viral Research

M. D. Anderson Sponsored Research Agreement
NBI sponsors Nerium oleander-based scientific research under a Sponsored Research Agreement with MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC) and Dr. Jagannadha Sastry. Dr. Sastry is the Director of the Virology and Gene Therapy program in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and Director of Multidisciplinary Research program in Viral Oncology at MDACC. The research focus has been on the antiviral properties of Nerium oleander extract on the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

Dr. Konstantin (Gus) Kousoulas, Louisiana State University (LSU) Sponsored Research Agreement
In addition, NBI has sponsored Nerium oleander-based scientific research under a Sponsored Research Agreement with Louisiana State University (LSU) on the Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1). This antiviral cold sore research has been conducted in the laboratory of Dr. Konstantin (Gus) Kousoulas, Director of Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine at Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Dr. Ravit Boger, John Hopkins’s University Research
Research is ongoing with Dr. Boger, Associate Professor with the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at John Hopkins University Children’s Center. Her research laboratory is focused on the Cytomegalovirus

M.D. Anderson Antiviral Research (HIV)

In addition to cancer, NBI is now focused on the antiviral effects of the Nerium oleander extracts. From review of anecdotal evidence in Ireland and results from a pilot study initiated on HIV patients in Latin America, NBI has identified possible health benefits for patients infected with the HIV virus. This clinical data indicates potential benefit to this patient population for treatment of HIV as a chronic versus an acute disease with no negative side effects reported. The data suggests that further scientific research is warranted to better understand the antiviral effects of the Nerium oleander extracts.

NBI has signed a Sponsored Research Agreement with M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas led by Dr. Jagannadha Sastry, Director of the Virology and Gene Therapy Program, as lead investigator. His antiviral research has focused on the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

Review of Dr. Sastry’s preliminary HIV research have been very positive and have been duplicated. His research has been conducted utilizing various Nerium extracts (Aqueous, NAE-8, etc.), oleandrin and additional cardiac glycosides and compounds. NBI continues to move forward with this research.

Dr. Sastry published his initial research in Fitoterapia in January 2013,"Nerium oleander derived cardiac glycoside oleandrin is a novel inhibitor of HIV infectivity", Shailbala Singh, Sachin Shenoy, Pramod N. Nehete, Peiying Yang, Bharti Nehete, Danielle Fontenot, Guojun Yang, Robert Newman, K. Jagannadha Sastry

Louisiana State University Antiviral Research (Herpes Virus / HSV-1)

NBI sponsored antiviral cold sore research with the Herpes Simplex Virus I (HSV-1). This research was conducted in the laboratory of Dr. Gus Kousoulas, Director of Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine at Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

HSV-1 can spread from cell-to-cell avoiding the extracellular environment. This mode of transmission is particularly important in cold sores where the virus spread from cell-to-cell often producing fused cells that allow the virus to be transmitted from one-cell-to-another adjacent cell. Dr. Kousoulas’s research has assisted NBI in research on the effect of Nerium Extract on viral spread.

John Hopkins University Children’s Center Antiviral Research (CMV Virus)

Dr. Boger’s studies focus on understanding the mechanisms of CMV inhibition by newly identified anti-CMV compounds. She is also a member of the collaborative anti-viral study group and is site principal investigator for clinical trials of congenital Cytomegalovirus infection. Top
